“Leia, drive now,” Eric said when he got in the car.

“What the hell just happened? Is there an unconscious guy with no pants in our trunk?” Leia got the Jag in gear and was heading toward I-95. She couldn’t believe that Eric tossed a half-naked guy in the trunk. This felt a lot like breaking the law. Freaked out, she focused on driving the car and not what might happen next.

“Not the highway.”

In Eric's hand was a phone she’d never seen before, and after he turned it off, he put it in the glovebox. He directed her through the center of Pooler, past the edge of civilization, until they reached a wildlife area. After winding down a small dirt path for a couple of miles, he pointed at a small clearing in the trees and had her pull over. She guided the Jag with a white-knuckle grip, breathing in quick ragged gasps like she’d just run a sprint. Eric appeared calm.

“Leia, it's going to be fine,” he said, his hand covering hers on the wheel. She looked down to see the split skin over three of his knuckles oozing blood. It didn’t feel like it was going to be fine.

He half turned in his seat to face her. “The guy in the trunk knows what’s going on at that gas station. He’s going to fill in a few blanks for us.”

“Okay,” she sputtered, her hands still locked in a death grip on the wheel. Eric’s calm was inconceivable to her.

“I’m going to have to encourage him to talk. You need to let me do what I need to do. Is that clear?”

“What are you going to do?” Her anxiety ratcheted up another notch.

“You don’t need to watch if you can’t handle it, just turn your back. What I do need is your ears. I need you to write down everything, names, dates, places. Any information he gives us that might be important later.”

“I can’t be part of this.” she faced Eric, shaking her head no, her hands trembling. This wasn’t something she could do; it wasn’t something she wanted to see Eric do.

He framed her face with his hands. “You already are part of this. We need information. I’m just going to rough him up a bit. I need you to take notes and not get in the way. You can cry it out as soon as we’re done, okay?”

She nodded, her tears threatening to spill. She would rather cry it out now and let their hostage go free.

He leaned in close and rested his forehead on hers, their breath mingling. She wrapped her hands around his wrists, the connection helping her regain control. His pulse beat evenly under her fingers.

“If we had more time, more resources, we could try another way, but we don’t. He is the best lead we have. I have to do something to keep you safe.” He pressed his lips to hers in an achingly soft kiss that hinted at the fierce emotions he was keeping in check.
